Tribute to the Most Expensive Coin in History — $18.87 Million

The 1933 Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagle is the most famous, valuable, and legally controversial coin in American history. Designed by acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, the $20 gold piece is widely regarded as the most beautiful coin ever produced by the United States Mint.

In 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102 — making it illegal for American citizens to own gold coins. The Philadelphia Mint had already struck 445,500 Double Eagles that year, but not a single one was authorized for release. The government ordered them all melted into bullion.

A small number survived. Over the following decades, the Secret Service investigated, seized specimens, and destroyed them. Virtually every surviving 1933 Double Eagle is still considered illegal government property to this day.

One coin escaped that fate. Known as the Farouk-Fenton specimen — after Egypt's King Farouk, who once owned it — this single coin was the subject of a landmark legal compromise between a private collector and the U.S. Treasury. It was sold at auction in 2002 for $7.59 million. In 2021, collector Stuart Weitzman consigned the same coin to Sotheby's, where it shattered records at $18.87 million — the highest price ever paid for a coin.

This collector's tribute proof captures every detail of that legendary original. The obverse features Lady Liberty striding forward with an olive branch and torch, while the reverse depicts a majestic eagle in flight above a rising sun. Each proof is composed of solid brass, layered with genuine 24-karat gold, and struck multiple times for razor-sharp detail and a brilliant finish.
