Most of the morganite on the market today comes from pegmatite mines in Brazil. Though only a minor producer today, mines in Madagascar still set the standard for the finest morganite in the world. It yields a magenta colored rough cut with crystals superior to any other source.

A name most people are familiar with is what morganite is named after – J.P. Morgan. He was a big financial backer of the arts and sciences back in the early 1900s. Tiffany and Company’s chief gemologist, George Kunz, was friends with Morgan, and therefore named the gem after him.
