OMG – Opal Earrings!

We totally want to show off our opal earrings, but we also want to share the complex history behind the gem. Let's just jump right in, we'll get back to our lovely selection in a second. A species of quartz, opals are luminous and iridescent stones with inclusions of many colors called "fire." They are often cut into cabochons to best display these colors. They’re on the softer side of gemstones, since they still contain a tiny bit of water from ancient seas, but you'll also see them made into doublets to make the gem harder and less susceptible to scratches. Opal is found in a range of hues, but white is usually what people think of first. White opals tend to have more diffused fire, due to their light background color. That sounds like a tiny campfire in a gemstone, doesn't it?

Opals have been treasured for thousands of years throughout the world. The name stems from the Latin word for precious stone. Ancient Romans believed it was the symbol of hope, good luck and purity and thought it warded off disease and evil. Ancient Arabs believed opals fell from heaven in flashes of lightning, which explained their colors. During the Middle Ages, there was widespread belief that opal was beneficial to eyesight - some even thought that its effects could render the wearer invisible…like your own personal invisibility cloak. In Medieval Scandinavia, blonde women wore opals in their hair to prevent it from going grey. Opals are still set in the crown jewels of France. Even today, it still remains a symbol of hope and inspiration and is said to bring good luck.

Wow that's a lot of history. Ok, let's get back to chatting about our amazing selection of opal earrings and such. You'll also see opal used a lot in rings, but we know it makes an elegant addition to just about any piece. Slightly similar to moonstone, opals are that gleaming gem that just might be missing from your collection. Add it to your jewelry box, we know you want to.
