About the Coin
The Silver Walking Liberty half dollar was minted only from 1916 to 1947. The obverse depicts a beautiful image of Lady Liberty - the same image that now appears on US Silver Eagle dollars. The reverse shows an eagle with its wings raised, ready to defend the United States against those who would try to take away our liberty. It was designed by Adolph A. Weinman and is said to be one of the most beautifully sculptured designs ever to appear on a United States coin. It was last minted in 1947, shortly after the end of World War II. Each coin was minted in 0.900 pure silver, and millions of these silver coins were officially melted to help the United States pay for World War II; countless more were thrown into the melting pot when silver soared to $50 an ounce in 1979-80. As a result, only a fraction of the original mintage remains.
