Shades range from sapphire blue, violet and green to colorless, white, gray, yellow, and brown. Sillimanite has a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale and also exhibits a perfect cleavage, similar to diamonds, topaz and fluorite gemstones. Traditionally deemed a collector's gem, sillimanite has been found in India, Africa, Sri Lanka, Burma and the USA.
