About the Creation of Cinnabar
Cinnabar is an ancient Chinese handicraft that dates back to the Song Dynasty and is often referred to as "lacquerware" and "China Red." Each bangle in this set is completely made by hand. It took the most skilled carvers over one year to produce the set.

The Cinnabar lacquer is created by combining the tree sap from a varnish tree. When the varnish tree is of appropriate size and age, slits are made in the tree to harvest the tree sap. The tree sap of a varnish tree is then mixed with pigments to create the bright red and black colors in this set.

This bangle is created in the traditional Chinese method which begins with a solid bangle core. At this point, a single layer of lacquer is applied to the core and left to dry. Upon drying, another layer of lacquer is applied to the bangle. This step is repeated sometimes over 500 times to achieve a desirable thickness to the bangle. The process of achieving this thickness takes often times well over one year to create as each layer must be completely dry before the next is applied.

After the bangle is of appropriate thickness, a skilled artisan can then meticulously carve them by hand. The tools used to carve cinnabar must be very sharp as cinnabar is very hard. If there are any mistakes made while carving, then the piece must be lacquered again to fill the mistake and carved again.
